Data + Assessment = Learning (Part 1)

Event Date: Mar 18, 2010
Teachers often give assessments and learn that either their students understood the lesson or did not understand part or all of it. As teachers we often feel that we have to move on even if all of our students did not get the information. In this session we will not only discuss the different types of assessments but we will discuss when to assess, when to re-teach, and how to help students adjust their learning. By the end of the session the participants will have an assessment plan in place.

Attendance at Part 2 is strongly recommended but not mandatory.

Vocabulary Development and Reading in the Content Area Part 1 and Part 2

Event Date: Mar 20, 2010
For many students, learning subject matter vocabulary and reading is like learning a foreign language. During the first part of the session we will discuss teaching academic language. Topics discussed will be which words to teach and how many to teach, Kate Kinsella’s direct vocabulary instruction and democratic participation, vocabulary knowledge rating, word splash, Frayer Method and Graphic Organizers. By the end of the session the participants will have at least one vocabulary lesson that can be used the next day or in the next unit.

Many teachers assign reading from the textbook, but students often return to class without completing the assignment. Students often have to be taught how to read and comprehend expository texts. During the second part of the day we will discuss summarization, question and answer relationships, three column charts, setting purpose and visualization. Participants will practice at least one strategy and take home at least one lesson that can be implemented at any point.

Please bring any materials that you need to plan a vocabulary lesson and your textbook or any current reading material.
